Manage SAS File Extension

The left-hand column of the table lists the file extensions that are associated with the SAS software installed on this machine, while the right-hand column lists the product currently assigned as the default for that file extension. In addition to the extensions that can be used by more than one SAS product, the table will list extensions that can be used by a SAS product but can be opened by a non-SAS product by default for the current user. In order to change the default product for a file type, click on the Product column for that file type and select the product you want to use as the default from the list that opens. If a file type has only one product listed, the association cannot be changed. Bold product names indicate a new product has been selected for a file extension.

Some file extensions are aliases for other file extensions. If a SAS product is selected with the current user association for one extension in a pair that are connected to each other, the change will display for both extensions. For example, if you change the SAS product associated with the .lst extension, it will also change the associated SAS product for the .bls extension. The exception to this process is when you change one extension to a SAS product but the other extension in the alias pair has already been associated to a third-party product assigned by a user. In that case, the second extension will remain associated with the previously associated third-party product until the association is explicitly changed on this page.

The following are alias file extensions used by SAS:

If you use the Manage SAS File Types task for an extension that is currently associated with a third-party product to a SAS product, several things will happen:

While you can use this task to reset an extension currently associated with a third-party product to a SAS product, you cannot use this task to reassign an extension association from a SAS product to a third-party product.

When you have selected a default product for each file extension, click Next to continue.
