    SN-006811 ***Alert Note***

    The %distance macro produces an incorrect matrix when the value of an ID
    variable matches a variable name

    Product: SAS/STAT
    Component: Multiple procedures
    Priority: ALERT

      The %distance macro allows you to specify an ID variable in the DATA=
      data set. If any value of the ID variable matches the name of a
      variable used to calculate the distance matrix, the resulting distance
      matrix will be incorrect.

      In the example below, NAME is the ID variable. The variables used to
      create the matrix are X, Y, and Z. Since one value of the variable NAME
      is also 'X', the computed matrix will be incorrect.

        data test;
              input name $ 1 @3 x y z;
        x 1 2 3
        a 2 1 2
        b 5 4 3

        title2 'incorrect results';
        %distance ( data=test,
                    method=dcorr, id=name,
                    var=x y z);

      To circumvent the problem, make sure that none of the values of your ID
      variable match the name of a variable used in the values for the VAR=
      keyword parameter.

      It is not sufficient to simply examine the resulting matrix. To
      determine if there is a problem with your analysis, you will need to
      inspect the DATA= data set. No warnings or errors appear.
